Fans crowding around the celebrities had caused Rita Wilson to trip, prompting an angry response from Tom Hanks.
Veteran actor Tom Hanks lost his cool with some fans who were getting too close to comfort, so much so that they had almost caused his wife Rita Wilson to take a fall. Per TMZ, the moment happened when Hanks and Wilson were heading to their car during a night out on Wednesday in New York when they were swarmed by fans seeking selfies and autographs. It was captured on video which has since been going viral, and you can see what happened by watching the clip below.
In the clip, the couple can be seen walking toward a vehicle with a group of fans asking for selfies following them. One fan then bumps into Wilson, causing her to gasp and nearly fall over. This gets the attention of Hanks who comes to his wife’s rescue, as the actor angrily told the fans to get back after almost injuring Wilson.
“This is my wife, back the f*** off!” Hanks shouts at the fans. When one person questions what happened, Hanks added, “Knocking over my wife!”
Before departing, Hanks takes a good few seconds to give the group of fans a death glare. They can be heard apologizing to him, with one fan remarking that he had been pushed into Wilson. Hanks follows Wilson into the car as the fans get a couple more apologies in for the two.
Hanks and Wilson met in 1981 on the set of the sitcom Bosom Buddies. The pair were married in 1988 following Hanks’ divorce from his first wife, Samantha Lewes, with whom he had two children, 44-year-old Colin Hanks and 40-year-old Elizabeth Hanks. Hanks and Wilson would have two sons, 31-year-old Chet Hanks and 26-year-old Truman Hanks.
The married couple also happened to be among the first celebrities to have publicly revealed a COVID-19 diagnosis around the start of the pandemic. At the time, Hanks had been in Australia shooting scenes for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic Elvis when he had contracted the disease. Hanks and Wilson announced their diagnosis in March 2020.
Last year, Wilson had taken Hanks on a bike ride for his milestone 65th birthday. She posted an image of Hanks to Instagram and noted, “Riding into 65 better than ever! Happy Birthday to the love of my life! Xox.”
Hanks’ Larry Crowne co-star Julia Roberts added in the comments section, “Happy Birthday to Tom!!! Love you both.”
More recently, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson both appeared in the Western TV series 1883, a Taylor Sheridan-created series that serves as a prequel to the hit show Yellowstone. Hanks played General Meade while Wilson played the storekeeper Carolyn. Wilson also recently appeared in the HBO Max thriller Kimi with Zoe Kravitz and Hanks can next be seen as Colonel Tom Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, which is scheduled to premiere in movie theaters on June 24, 2022.
