Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s defamation trial was interrupted yesterday when a member of the audience had a fit of giggles.

This isn’t the first time the high-profile court case has dissolved in laughter, despite its serious subject matter.

Pirates of the Caribbean star Depp is suing his ex-wife for $50 million over a 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she claimed to be a survivor of domestic abuse.

Depp is arguing that he was the real victim of their volatile marriage and that Heard’s accusations wrecked his career and his reputation.

Heard, meanwhile, is countersung her ex-husband for $100 million, maintaining that he was physically abusive to her on multiple occasions during their relationship.

The trial has seen both parties give harrowing testimonies over the last few weeks. But despite the tearful statements, it hasn’t all been doom and gloom in the trial, which has often seen audience members struggling to contain their laughs.

Yesterday, legal proceedings were interrupted by a spectator who burst out laughing from his seat in the gallery of Fairfax County Court, Virginia.

In  a video from inside the court, the man can be seen holding his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with mirth as he struggles to contain his giggles.

Unsurprisingly, the laughing fit caused a bit of a stir in the courtroom, with other audience members looking over at him and chuckling.

In the end, the man is so overcome with laughter that he has to stagger out of the courtroom so he can regain his composure.

While it’s not clear what caused him to erupt into giggles, we do know that the incident happened on Wednesday – the same day that Heard’s former best friend Raquel Pennington gave an emotional testimony to the court.

Meanwhile, the man was smart to remove himself from the courtroom after Judge Penny Azcarate issued a warning that people would be kicked out if they could not control themselves.

The caution came after a particularly loud bout of laughter from the audience, prompted by Depp testifying that he doesn’t watch his own movies.

“I don’t watch them. I feel better not watching them. What was the question again?” the actor said jokingly from the witness stand.

Laughter erupted, prompting the judge to warn spectators: “Order in the court, or I will have you removed.”
