  • The couple will meet leading man Tom Cruise and his co-star, Jennifer Connelly, at the glitzy showing
  • Kate, 40, and William, 39, last attended a film premiere in September when they watched James Bond

The Duchess of Cambridge channeled her inner Hollywood A-lister as she joined Prince William at the Top Gun: Maverick premiere in London on Thursday night.

Kate, 40, looked radiant in an off-the-shoulder Roland Mouret column gown, £2,300 Alexander McQueen clutch, and £10,500 Robinson Pelham diamond star earrings as she made her glamorous entrance on the red carpet.

Meanwhile, Prince William, 39, demonstrated his sartorial flair in a midnight blue Alexander McQueen velvet dinner jacket, tuxedo trousers and velvet slippers embroidered with miniature fighter jets in a nod to the film.

The couple joined leading man Tom Cruise and his co-stars Jennifer Connelly and Miles Teller as A-listers and British TV royalty descended on London’s Leicester Square for the glitzy gala screening.

At one point Cruise, 59, reached out and took Kate’s hand as she navigated a set of stairs in her point toe black pumps.

The pair seemed to be getting on famously, with Kate flashing a megawatt smile at the actor as they chatted ahead of the premiere.

Cruise, who took part in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations last weekend, introduced the royal couple to his co-stars Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Miles Teller.

Ahead of the premiere, Cruise, 59, said he and the Duke of Cambridge ‘have a lot in common as he spoke of his admiration for the royal.

‘We have a lot in common. We both love England and we’re both aviators, we both love flying,’ he said.

The actor also expressed his joy to be back on the red carpet, saying: ‘I love what I do, I’ve always enjoyed it and I’m enjoying it even more now. ‘Particularly after the last couple of years, just to have an event like this is extraordinary.’

Maverick, which has so far received rave reviews from critics, sees Hollywood star Cruise reprise the role of US naval aviator Pete Mitchell and is being released 36 years after the 1986 original.

The Duchess of Cambridge opted for a figure-flattering black-and-white gown from the Roland Mouret archives for the occasion.

She styled the sleek monochrome dress with a black clutch by go-to designer Alexander McQueen and a pair of classic point-toe heels which could just be glimpsed under the hem of her gown.

Kate finished the look with her breathtaking £10,500 Tsar Star Earrings by British jewelry designer Robinson Pelham.

The royal mother-of-three wore her brunette locks in a sleek parting and opted for dramatic dark eye makeup and a slick of pink lipstick.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were welcomed to the premiere by Lord Lieutenant Sir Kenneth Olisa, Cameron Saunders, Acting Chair of The Film and TV Charity and Alex Pumfrey, the organisation’s CEO.

According to reports Kate and William were honoured with their own VIP preview of the new film at a London cinema last month after Cruise heard William was a big fan of the original 1986 film.

The royals were joined by a whole host of A-listers at the event – posing in front of a real P51 fighter plane jet outside the central cinema.

Among them was Carol Vorderman, 61, who got into the spirit of things by slipping into a tight-fitting flight suit with a pair of aviator sunglasses hanging from her chest.

Miss Vorderman, who got her pilot’s license back in 2014, accentuated her waist with a tight-fitting belt around the suit, finishing the look with a simple black clutch bag.

In a nod to her former role as Countdown’s numbers maestro and Cruise’s Top Gun character Maverick, the name on her flight suit read ‘Maverick’.

She said of the outfit: ‘Strictly speaking it should be a gown on the red carpet tonight but this is my little homage to the original Top Gun and to my passion for aviation.’

Cruise’s co-star Jennifer Connelly, 51, looked elegant in a cream patterned dress – just hours after also jetting in from the Cannes Film Festival.

Also in attendance at the Leicester Square event – where fans waited for hours in the hope of catching a glimpse of Cruise – was Hayley Atwell.

Miss Atwell – who stars alongside Cruise in the upcoming Mission Impossible film – looks stunning in a black velvet crop top with a matching long skirt gloves.

The pair have been plagued with rumours they are dating but their current relationship status is unclear following reports of a break-up.

The event is being held as a fundraising event in aid of The Film and TV Charity, which supports people working behind the scenes in the UK’s screen sector.

Earlier this month, Cruise made a dramatic entrance at the US premiere of the film, landing a helicopter on an aircraft carrier in San Diego, California.

The film shown was A Matter Of Life And Death starring David Niven.

The most recent performance featured a screening of the First World War epic 1917, directed by Sir Sam Mendes, and took place in 2019 at the Odeon Luxe in Leicester Square with the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall in attendance.

On Sunday he attended an event celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Windsor. Last night he was in Cannes to promote the film at the annual Film Festival.

Tonight marks the 76th Royal Film Performance.

Initially called the Royal Command Film Performance, the first Royal Film Performance took place at the Empire Cinema in Leicester Square in 1946 and was attended by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret.
