A Brooklyn bishop was recently the victim of a frightening robbery, and it all happened while his service was being livestreamed.

According to New York City police, Bishop Lamor Whitehead and his wife were robbed at gunpoint during Sunday services at the Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries church in Canarsie, Brooklyn, New York. The armed robbers stole about $400,000 worth of jewelry.

Three armed gunmen burst in at 11:15 a.m. while Whitehead was giving his sermon. At first their insidious intentions were unknown. But the assailants soon let people know it was a robbery by displaying firearms and demanding property.

Whitehead took to Instagram to talk about the experience. He said: “When I see them come into the sanctuary with their guns, I told everybody to get out, everybody just get out. I didn’t know if they wanted to shoot the church up or if they were just coming for a robbery.”

Whitehead was thankful that the armed suspects were only after their material possessions and not their lives. He stated, “They took all of my wife’s jewelry and took all of my jewelry.” They even took sentimental items such as his wedding ring.

A video of the robbery was initially shared by news outlets because the service was being livestreamed. It has since been taken down. NBC News reports the unverified video shows Whitehead dropping to his hands and knees saying “alright, alright.” Later, a masked suspect appears to point a gun at his back and take his jewelry.

The suspects fled the scene of the crime on foot before getting into a white Mercedes-Benz. They are believed to have gotten away with $400,000 worth of jewelry. Whitehead hopes the suspects will turn themselves in. He claims to have chased after them after the incident. While no one was physically injured in the altercation, he fears for his congregation’s mental health after going through this traumatic event, stating, “The women and children that was in my church, my daughter, she’s traumatized right now. She’s not even talking.”

Whitehead has previously been in the media for claiming he was trying to get murder suspect Andrew Abdullah to turn himself in. Abdullah was wanted for the fatal shooting of Daniel Enriquez, a Goldman Sachs employee, aboard the Q train. Abdullah ultimately was arrested by the police without aid from Whitehead..

The investigation of the robbery is still ongoing. There was no official comment from Whitehead’s church, the Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries.
